Charleston County Launches Free Property Recording Alert System

Charleston County residents now have a new, free tool to help protect their property interests. Charleston County Register of Deeds Karen Hollings recently announced the launch of the Property Recording Alert System — an email notification service designed to keep residents informed about activity related to property records in their name.

“The Charleston County Register of Deeds Office is pleased to introduce the new Property Recording Alert System designed to help residents stay informed about activity related to property records and other relevant documents found in their name,” Hollings said. “I’d like to thank the Charleston County Technology Services Department for helping our office do this internally, saving taxpayer dollars and making Charleston County government more accessible for our citizens.”

How It Works

Signing up is quick and easy:

  1. Register online — Visit recordingalert.charlestoncounty.gov and enter your first and last name (minimum 3 characters each) along with your email address.
  2. Confirm your email — A quick verification ensures alerts go to the right place.
  3.  Stay informed — You’ll receive an email anytime a document is recorded that matches the name you registered.

You can register multiple name variations — including family members, maiden names, or former legal names — to expand your coverage.

Why It Matters

Property fraud and unauthorized transactions can happen without an owner’s knowledge. This system allows you to:

  • Monitor your property records for unexpected changes.
  • Take timely action if a suspicious document appears.
  • Stay aware of liens, title changes, or other activity related to your name.

While the alerts are for informational purposes only and don’t replace formal title searches, legal advice, or detailed document review, they offer a convenient first line of defense.

Key Details

  • Cost: Free for all residents.
  • Unsubscribe anytime: You control your participation.
  • Name-based matching: Alerts are generated based on name prefixes, so some variations may not trigger notifications.

The Charleston County Register of Deeds Office records land titles, liens, and other property-related documents, ensuring they meet state and federal recording standards and remain available for public review.
